In 2014, Stellar raised $35 million in its initial token sale of its native token, XLM. Stellar’s supply is managed by the nonprofit Stellar Development Foundation (SDF), which steers development of the protocol. When Stellar started, 100 billion XLMs were created with an annual inflation rate of 1 percent. The inflation rate has since been removed. Stellar is a layer-1 open-source, decentralized, peer-to-peer blockchain network that provides a framework for developers to create applications, issue assets, write smart contracts, and connect to existing financial rails. Stellar is designed to enable creators, innovators, and developers to build projects on the network that can interoperate with each other.
Smart-Contracts on the Stellar Network
Smart contracts on Stellar launched on Mainnet following a successful validator vote on February 20th, 2024. Stellar’s smart contract platform includes the smart contract environment, a Rust SDK, a CLI, and an RPC server. Soroban is the smart contracts platform on the Stellar network. Soroban has several characteristics (such as resource limits, security considerations, and more) that force contracts to use only a narrow subset of the full Rust language and must use specialized libraries for most tasks.
